Compare the P-Bandai HG Gundam Naion and MG Barbatos Lupus Expansion Set to decide which Premium Bandai kit fits your build style and display goals.
Quick answer
Choose the HG Gundam Naion if you want a detailed, highly articulated manga-accurate mobile suit in 1/144 scale. Pick the MG Barbatos Lupus Expansion Set if you already own the MG Barbatos Lupus and want the massive Valkyrja Buster Sword and effect parts for a dramatic weapon display.
Scale and build complexity
The HG Gundam Naion is a 1/144 scale kit with new molded parts for high accuracy and articulation, making it a straightforward build that fits on a smaller shelf. The MG Barbatos Lupus Expansion Set is not a full kit but an add-on for the 1/100 MG Barbatos Lupus, so you need the base model already. The expansion adds the Valkyrja Buster Sword, an arm rocket launcher, and effect parts for the Alaya-Vijnana System limiter release, which increases the display presence but requires more assembly and space.
Weapon and effect part focus
If your priority is a complete mobile suit with integrated design, the Gundam Naion delivers a self-contained build with striking details. If you want to upgrade an existing MG Barbatos Lupus with a show-stopping weapon and shoulder vent effects, the expansion set is the clear choice. The trade-off is that the expansion set does not include a full Gundam—only accessories and effect parts.
Trade-offs at a glance
- Complete kit vs. add-on: Gundam Naion is a full HG kit; the Expansion Set is only accessories for the MG Barbatos Lupus. If you don't own the MG Barbatos Lupus, the Naion is ready to build immediately.
- Scale and shelf space: Naion is 1/144 (smaller); the Expansion Set fits 1/100 scale and includes a large sword that demands more display room. Measure your shelf before committing to the expansion's oversized weapon.
- Articulation vs. weapon drama: Naion offers high articulation for dynamic poses; the Expansion Set adds visual impact through the Valkyrja Buster Sword and effect parts. Choose Naion for posing, the expansion for a static centerpiece upgrade.
